I finally got a job!!! :D

Monday, November 23, 2009

School, Job Searching etc.

For the whole semester I have been searching for a job, but to no avail. I have had interview, after interview, with no one calling me back. Last week I had an interview on Wednesday that I thought I had nailed; turns out that I didn't because they didn't call me on Friday. What a letdown! I'll admit, I cried. After being rejected for job, after job, I finally do well on an interview and still nothing. It does do a hurt for your self-esteem, that's for sure. So for now, I'm still at home playing the housewife. I'd love to have the money that comes from a job, but I really do like just being a housewife. If Alan ever gets contracted with the Army, I might not have to get a job. Yeah?

School. Boy howdy! I've had a relatively easy semester, but I've slacked on a couple of things: namely my two 201 essays. I HAVE to start working on the first today, now that I'm done with the first draft of my 200 paper, I need to start looking at other homework that I need to get done. December 9 (when my 201 papers are due and some other homework is also) is drawing WAY too close for my comfort. I need to get crackin!

This semester I took the beginning hockey class at BYU. It has been so much fun! There were days when I really didn't want to go, but it would turn out that I had tremendous amounts of fun and never regretted going to class. I'm planning on taking it next semester also, this time with Alan. So it should be really fun.

Thanksgiving!!! Yeah, it's finally here! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! I love all the food, and getting the family together! It's so much fun! This year, Alan and I are going up to my parents house. We're leaving TOMORROW :D and will be there until Friday.

Which brings me to my next topic. Alan is in Army ROTC now, and he is on the color-guard for this week's BYU football game. Since he is on the color-guard we get front-row tickets to the game. This week's game isn't just any old game--it's the BYU vs. U of U game! The BIG one! Yeah that's right! We get free front-row tickets to the biggest game of the year! Lucky us, I know! Haha! Anyway, it should be loads of fun.

Wedding Pictures!

These are some pictures that I tweaked a little bit!

I'm Back!

I have neglected by blog for far too long. I am back! And I mean to set this straight!

It's true, I'm married and oh how glorious it is! I really like being married. It's not as if Alan and I are together 24/7 or even close to that, but I love having it just be him and me most of the time. We teach the sunbeams in Primary and that's another reason I love being married, we can be called to the same position and help each other.

But not all of married life is bliss. I still haven't found a job and that's making me really nervous. We need me to get a job so that we can survive. Alan doesn't make enough to pay for all of our expenses and so my income is desperately needed. I've applied to so many jobs and have been turned down on all of them. It's really disappointing. I think that this weekend, while not watching Conference, I'm going to be giving my resume away to as many businesses as I can think of.

That's about it for life right now. Alan and I are happy, I don't have a job, and school is going wonderfully!

One Week . . .

Only one more week until I get married!!! :D Excitement!!

Here I am

So lots has happened in the time I've been here at Philmont, WAY too much to post. If you're really interested you're just going to have to ask me about stories, pictures, and my journal and I will fill you in on what went on this summer. Also check out my pictures on Facebook.

Scamper, I mean scatter

Tomorrow we go scampering off to the back country. It's scatter day for Head of Dean!! This means that we will be taking all our belongings, food, program (activity at the camp)stuff, and tents and move out to the middle of no where for the rest of the summer! Sounds great doesn't it? I'm excited to be going; base camp is not my favorite place. And it should help the time go faster, which will be super nice.

We work 9 days on and then we get 3 days off. This first part will be a little longer than that, as I will not get days off until June 17, but that's okay, I can survive with that. So I'm off to the back woods of Philmont! See ya'll in a couple of weeks!

Sunny, rainy, windy, cold, hot New Mexico

New Mexico weather is the most bipolar weather anywhere; yes it beats Idaho and Utah combined!

Here I am sitting at Philmont Scout Ranch, I'm actually sitting right outside the SSSAC, Silver Sage Staff Activities Center, basically a rec room for the staff members. Last year it was being built when we got here and they said it would be open June 15. Well June 15 came and went; "Oh July 20" says they; July 20 came and went. "August 18 for sure!" Nope, still closed. They finally dedicated it even though it didn't open until this year, so here I am. It's a nice building and I like it, but it really needs more furniture, which I've been told will be coming in the near future, but from last year's experience my guess is that it won't come until next year.

Last night was rather an adventure. Andrew, Henry, Luke and I were really bored and also hungry. I was hungry because I skipped dinner (I was napping). Andrew and Henry were hungry because they are 6'6" and skinny! Luke is a boy and so is of course always hungry, but he was mostly hungry because dinner was not the best. So we took a trip to Raton. Raton is 34 miles north of Philmont. We left at 9 pm for a Denny's run. It was fun, I had a good time, and thankfully we didn't run into any deer.

Oh story from earlier yesterday. Yesterday afternoon it was raining super hard, I mean like hard, as only new Mexico rain can. Andrew, Charity, Henry, Gene and I decided to go to Cimarron for some ice cream. well we were driving there and all of the sudden an antelope bounded across the road a decent distance in front of us. I thought Andrew (who was driving) had seen the animal but as we got closer I realized he hadn't. I screamed and he swerved. We didn't get hurt but the car was sure hydroplaning. Stupid animals!

That's it for adventures right now!

Bridal Shower

So today was my bridal shower put on by my future mother-in-law and an aunt of Alan's. It was such a wonderful day! His side of the family is so nice and sweet and open. I already love them! So this bridal shower, I had a wonderful time and everyone was super nice and gave the nicest presents! I was even reunited with one of my friends from elementary and junior high days, Nicole Laney Galbraith. It was great to see her again and to catch up on everything. Here are some pictures from the wonderful day!

One of the best parts of the day was the time I spent with my mom and sisters on the car ride down and back. We all have so much fun together and this trip was no exception. We were ridiculous and just had an all around good time.

So I have a couple of awesome stories from today. Here they are quoted verbatim from my letter to Alan.

"On the way down our car started making some funny noise. It was coming from the wheel well and we decided to stop and check it out. Well it was the piece of plastic that goes in front of the wheel. A bolt had come out. Well genius that I am, I decided to take 2 zip ties and tie it back, and I saved the day! Now comes the funny part. I am doing this in my cute black button-down shirt and my nice jeans. I'm lying in the gutter on my back with my head under the car, yelling at Karen to keep the 'friendly' ground squirrels away! There were these ground squirrels that were overly friendly because they had been fed WAY too often! They got WAY too close and were scaring the bejeebies out of me! Haha!

The other funny story happened at a restaurant on the way back. It was a sit down place and so we sat and the hostess came to bring us water. She was carrying all four glasses at once and put them down on the table, but one of them dropped very suddenly. It was like a geyser ALL OVER mom! IT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING EVER!!!!! The poor girl felt SO bad, but you know my mom, she was just like "Ahh, no big deal, don't worry about it. It's only water." But man! I couldn't stop laughing, and hard laughing, so hard that I could barely breath laughing! It was great!!"

What good times!!

Take a gander at what I'm going to talk about . . .

If you guessed Alan, wedding or Philmont, you're spot on! Looking back at my recent posts it seems like I have a very one track mind, but hey that's all that's happening in my life right now.

Mom and I decided to make my own bouquet and so that's what we did last night. It was fun, but since neither Mom or I are really too creative it was slightly difficult piecing it all together. But it was great and this morning we got it done. I took pictures to send to Alan and my mother-in-law.

Mom and I have been working on a quilt of mine that has spent the last year at my parent's place, just gathering dust. It's coming along nicely, but I get sick of quilting every once in awhile and then my work gets sloppy, so today I took quilting off and Mom and I went shopping instead. As always, Mom and I had a bunch of fun being ridiculous.

Alan is finally in Jordan and from his blog and his email it sounds like he is having a wonderful time. As always I'm glad he has this chance to go to school at the University of Jordan for the summer. It will greatly help him, not just with his Arabic, but also with his self-confidence in his ability to speak Arabic. I have full faith in him.

So Philmont, my last topic of the day. So when I got home from BYU, I was completely out of money. When I say completely, I really mean completely. I was in the hole in my checking account. Thanks to Mom I was able to cash in some old savings bonds and thanks to Karen for letting me take over her paper route. Dad is giving me odd jobs around the house in exchange for a new tire for my car. My family is absolutely amazing! They are so helpful and will catch me when I fall every time. I love them so much and I appreciate them just as much. They are wonderful people. Hopefully I'll end up with a new tire and enough money to pay for gas on the way to Philmont.

Holey moley!

Wow! That's about all I can say right now. I've been writing lists of everything that needs to get done before I leave for Philmont and can I just say that I am feeling just a little bit overwhelmed?

We went wedding shopping today and found quite a few things that I've been needing, so that cuts down on my lists, which is a very good thing, but it really hardly made a dent. My biggest problem right now is that I have no way of contacting my fiance. I have some questions that need to be answered by him, but he hasn't answered my emails. It's not a big deal, most of these questions can wait for awhile, but when i get overwhelmed I usually stress about getting everything done EXACTLY AT THAT MOMENT so that I don't forget. I need to just take a breather. I'm so happy that he's in the Middle East and I hope that he's having the time of his life (oh and I hope that he's not trying my cell because it's out of money at the moment)! I'm slightly jealous of him, as I would love to be seeing all those amazing sites also, but I'll just have to be satisfied with pictures (which I will be, don't anybody worry).

I visited my former seminary teachers today. It was so much fun! One of them had bet me that I would be married after my first year at BYU and I had said no way! Well, they both took the chance to rub it in my face that I was wrong. We had a great time laughing and talking about what's in store for my future with Alan.

Tonight I played with my hair and veil, and also experimented with makeup. What fun I had being a total girl! I will post pictures as soon as I get them from my mom's camera (don't worry, I don't have my dress on, so Alan, sorry, you still have to wait ;) ). So tonight was extremely fun! I love playing with hair and makeup, though looking at me on a day to day basis you might not believe me. But I do on special occasions, like to dress up and make myself look absolutely gorgeous, and let me tell you that at my wedding I will (not to brag of course, lol)!

So all in all, it's tough trying to sort out all this wedding stuff, but I am trying to keep myself above waters and have a wonderful time!

Home again home again jiggity jig!

Well I'm home from my first year of college. It's so crazy to think how fast the past 8 months has flown by! It seems like just yesterday I was sitting where I am now (in my bedroom) playing around on my new computer, surrounded by boxes packing to go to Provo. Now I'm sitting on my bed, playing on my computer, surrounded by boxes packing EVERYTHING that I own so that when I come back from Philmont I can move back down to Provo, into married housing this time. Crazy how time flies and how situations change!

So Alan is now in Egypt. I haven't heard anything from him since he arrived in Austria for a layover. He has a blog that he will be writing on during his summer in Jordan. Here's the link to it in case any of my readers are curious as to what he is up to http://alanibnmichaelibnbillibnkurt.blogspot.com/

So, as I said above, I'm packing right now. I don't really mind packing to tell the truth. It gives me a chance to reminisce and reflect over past experiences. Another reason why I like to pack is because it gives me a chance to rid myself of unwanted or unneeded items. Ask anyone that knows me, especially my mother or Alan, and they will tell you of my lack of sentimentality. I will throw anything away and feel remorse for only about 5 minutes. In my opinion it stems from my wanting to forget things in my past and so I throw away anything that reminds me of that time. But, also, I really have no sentimentality. If something doesn't enrich my life it gets tossed, or if it doesn't have major memories attached, it gets tossed. In summary, I am definitely NOT a pack rat (PS Kari if you read this, you're more than welcome to come get your dresses anytime that you want, I won't throw them away, don't worry, lol).

Yesterday I left Provo. It was hard saying goodbye to all of my roommates except for Krista. Krista and I live in the same town so we're planning on hanging out before I have to go to Philmont. All of us Penrose 80 girls have gotten so close throughout the last 8 months. We are now all best friends and it was really hard to say goodbye. But I will see them again in only 4 months, which is actually not that long of a time. I mean that's how long Alan will be gone, and I'll see him before I see my girlies. So basically it was hard, but I know we will all survive and have a wonderful summer. Anyway girls, I LOVE YOU!!

BUT now I'm home and I get to hang out with my best friend Casey. All through, well most of it, high school Casey and I were stuck at the hip, especially during senior year. I missed her a lot last summer and this school year. She was my other half and I miss her.

Well my parents are calling for me to go upstairs for some lunch, so I'm off!

Last of them all!

So this is it, one more final and then my freshman year will be OVER!! Yahoo!! Sadly, I'm counting the exact number of points I need in order to get a B in the class. Pathetic I know, but I really am sick of school and all this jazz.

Yesterday I was showing Somers all my pictures of Philmont and telling her all my awesome stories and I'm just ready to go be out in the middle of no where. But I still have a month to go and lots to do in that month.

So Alan leaves in a day and a half and it's slightly sad. I'm super excited for him to be going and I wouldn't have it any other way. The worst part of all of this is that we have to leave Provo at three in the morning on Thursday so that Alan can be at the airport at four so that he can leave at six. Oh blah! But I think that we're going to pull an all-nighter, so that might be pretty fun.

Anyway, it's back to my test so I'm off!

It's more than past time for another post . . .

Well lots has been happening in the past month or so since I last wrote. But I can basically sum it up in one phrase, sick of school.

I changed my major and so now I'm going for a History BA. For a class I planned out my whole school career and I am really excited for a lot of the classes that are included in the history major.

Okay, well I'm really going to change the subject of this post. School ends in three days which is so crazy! I can't believe that my freshman year of college is now over. Time has gone so fast and I have learned so much. So now we'll go over the highlights of the past year:

1. Getting engaged. Of course this is at the top of the list, what's better than falling in love? Absolutely NOTHING!! :D

2. Summering at Philmont. Best job that I've ever had. I'm so glad that I took the risk and went out there. I learned a lot about myself, living on my own, and what I really want out of life. It also helped me to simplify my life and to realize what is truly important to me. Plus, Alan wrote me letters all summer, which is DEFINITELY NOT a bad thing. :)

3. BYU. I've had so much fun this year! I love BYU, the atmosphere here is amazing, I love the honor code, and I love the whole spiritual aspect of this school.

4. In conjunction with number three, MY ROOMMATES! These are my best friends. I have grown to love these girls so much. They have helped me through so many things this semester and we have had SO much fun being wild and crazy together.

So there are probably some more highlights but I can't think of any at this time so I'll just have to write something more later.

Hockey and other fun

Well it's been awhile since I have written so here I am again!

Every Tuesday and most Thursday's Alan takes me to go play hockey. When we first started dating I was not a hockey fan. It had never been a big thing in my town, all the hockey players were the pot-smoking, drinking boys; my parents didn't care about any sports and so I had never gotten involved in hockey. Well then I started dating Alan, and hockey takes up almost as much time in his life as I do. I had to at least understand his passion. One of our first dates was going to a BYU hockey game. That was so much fun!! It was one of the best dates I have ever been on, I really enjoyed myself. Alan plays goalie on a city league here in Provo and so I went to his games also. Soon I got hooked. Hockey is such an invigorating sport! It's non-stop action, every minute has something going on! So, in short, I fell in love with the sport, so when Alan invited me to go with him to the BYU hockey class lab and learn how to play hockey, I immediately said yes. Well I've been playing for about 6 weeks now. I'm still not very good, but I'm greatly enjoying myself. It's such a thrill to be flying around on the ice, and I really like to body check that endearing fiance of mine ;)! Haha! Here are some recent pictures of us being awesome!

Also, some other AWESOME news. My dorm's best friend, Alan Miller, got his mission call yesterday. He's going to Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Spanish-speaking!!! It's so exciting!! Congratulations to him! We threw him a party last night and Krista made an awesome powerpoint, hahahaha! Oh man, was it hilarious or what! She took a whole bunch of pictures of Philadelphia from Google and imposed a picture of him with a mustache on top of them all. It was rather humorous!

So basically that's life right now. Lots of fun with the girlies and both Alan's and just trying to stay afloat of school.

Because I Can

So I had an epiphany the other day. Mom and I had some issues about the wedding and we weren't talking very clearly. I was pretty upset when we were done talking. Somers wandered in my room and asked if I was okay. I told her that mom and I had fought about the wedding. Then I just spilled everything. I told her how I was sick of planning the wedding, I was sick of social pressures to have a super nice reception, really nice announcements and the best photographer around. I really don't care that much about my receptions and the stupid announcements. All I care about is getting married to the love of my life and sealed for time and all eternity. After that, pictures are important, just because I want something that captures that time. She helped me to see that the social pressures are crap, that I need to do what will make me happy, and for me, that means simple, nice, and not expensive. So there you have it, a nice, simple, inexpensive wedding coming right up!

So yesterday was one of the best days ever!! I was just super happy all day. Yesterday morning Alan took me to play hockey like he does almost every Tuesday. Yesterday was special, as he decided that I was ready to suit up completely. So I decked myself out in all my hockey glory! It was awesome!!!! I really wish I had pictures to post, but I don't have any, pooh! So after hockey, it was just a nice relaxing day. The roomies and I had a lot of fun, just being completely ridiculous (oh and Alan Miller was there also). Lots of fun times! Then Alan, the roomies and I went to our stake's production of From Cumorah's Hill. I felt the Spirit super strong. It was so wonderful! They did a wonderful job.

We hung out at home after that. We put in the movie "Kate and Leopold" and had a good time watching that. I really was missing Alan by that time and so when he showed up at 10 I was so happy! I love him so much. He then asked if I wanted to go to a movie, I said yes and off we went. Valkrye was an awesome movie, I would suggest it to anyone; very, very cool!

Tonight, in about two hours, Alan and I will head over to the hockey rink for his game that starts at 10:30. Right now I'm just sitting here, waiting for him to come home . . . .

Saturday Morning in Bed

As most of my posts have been written, I'm once again sitting in bed on a beautiful Saturday morning. From my little window I can see the sun shining brightly out there in the big, wide world.

So things to talk about: 1. I made a decision about this summer. 2. Planning a wedding. 3. School and decisions with that.

Okay, so first up, decisions for this summer. Alan, my parents and I all had lengthy discussions about what would be the best thing for me. My parents would have paid for school this summer, which would have been awesome, but the major question was, did I really want to go to school a year round? Alan was the one who first said that I desperately need a break, a relaxation before hitting life head on, full steam ahead. Mom totally agreed with Alan in that I do need a break. They also both told me that I need to live my life with no regrets and they don't want me to regret not going to Philmont when I had the opportunity. So all in all, I'm going back this year and it will be super awesome!!!

2. Planning a wedding. Man alive! Last night I went through all I need to get done before I leave and holy wow! There's so much to do! I know that Mom and Carol Lee will be able to finish all the details, after I've done what I could before I leave. Whew, I'd better get on that!

3.School decisions. Krista and I were talking the other night about majors and what to do with our education. I have decided that I really am going to major in history. I was looking at a list of classes and all seem so very interesting. So I think that I've found my niche.

Lots of decisions this week, phew! Haha! Well that's what I get for growing up. But I love it, I really do. Especially since it means I get to marry the love of my life.

Beautiful Day and Boding Thoughts

Oh my gosh! Has anyone looked outside today!? It's absolutely gorgeous! It's 44 degrees, the sun is shining and most of the snow is gone. Craziness is what this is. It's only February 20. I suspect that the weather's going to turn nasty again for the first half of March and then voila, beautiful again!

This is a little odd, but I love the smell of spring. It's a smell that originates from the moldy grass and leaves that have been sitting under the snow all winter. Sounds pretty gross right? Wrong! It's a wonderful smell, that makes me think of newness and warmth and summertime!

Speaking of summertime, I have the biggest dilemma right now. I was accepted again at Philmont. I'm supposed to work at Head of Dean, which is one of the prettiest spots in Philmont I think. Here are some pictures from the hike that leads to HoD from the Maxwell turnaround.

So my big dilemma now is: should I go back to Philmont, make some money and have a wonderful time; or should I stay here, get 17 credits this summer (graciously paid for by my parents, thank you, thank you, thank you!!) and earn just a little money and work my tail end off to get my degree faster.

Choices, choices, choices! Bah! Well that's what I get for growing up.

Okay, One More Thing

So I found this extremely weird, that my fiance would fill something like this out, since high school wasn't his favorite memory. So in lieu of him doing it, I felt like I should . . . okay, I'm just super bored because it's a day off and I don't want to do homework yet, so I'm wasting time.

1. Did you date someone from your school?

2. Did you marry someone from your high school?
Nope, I'm definitely not going to, thank goodness.

3. Did you carpool to school?
I should have walked,I lived close enough, but my best friend Casey gave me a ride almost everyday.

4. What kind of car did you have?
Mostly a '91 Mitsubishi Gallant and a '91 GMC Sierra.

5. What kind of car do you have now?
I don't have one personally yet, but in August I will have a 2005 Taurus.

6. It's Friday night...where are you now?
Hanging out with Alan.

7. It's Friday night...where were you then?
At a party at Andrew's or Krista's or even my place.

8. What kind of job did you have in high school?
I had a paper route for awhile, worked at Wendy's for 8 months, my main job was as an after school custodian.

9. What kind of job do you do now?
Currently unemployed *cough* lazy woman *cough*

10. Were you a party animal?
Well yes and no. Yes I went to a lot of parties and I was always out with friends, but it was always the Mormon parties, so no drinking, drugs or anything like that.

11. Were you considered a flirt?
By those who knew me.

12. Were you in band, choir, sports or cheerleading?
Nope, I did no extra-curricular activities, what a loser huh?

13. Were you a nerd?
Oh yeah! Super smart, with super good grades (accomplished because I was too much of a sissy to take AP classes, I totally wimped out).

14. Did you get suspended or expelled?
Nope, and I have sluffed class, many times. Ask me about it sometime Alan, I think you'll get a kick out of some of my stories.

15. Can you sing the fight song?
Not at all. I never knew our fight song, lots of people didn't. The football team and the cheerleaders were like the only ones who did.

16. Who was/were your favorite teacher(s)?
All of my history teachers, Baczuk, Wixom, Saunders, and Mrs. Rahl my English teacher.

17. Where did you sit during lunch?
In the hall where my locker was, or at home.

18. What was your school's full name?
Skyline High School

19. When did you graduate?

20. What was your school mascot?

21. If you could go back and do it again, would you?
Oh gosh, no!!

22. Did you have fun at Prom?
It was alright, not my favorite dance by far.

23. Do you still talk to the person you went to Prom with?
Not in a long time, but we're still friends, I think.

24. Are you planning on going to your next reunion?
I don't know. It will be my first, but I don't know if I want to.

25. Do you still talk to people from school?
Yeah, I'm rooming with one of my best friends from high school. Sadly I don't keep in constant contact with my best friend Casey. I should definitely email her more often. I love you Casey!!

Okay, so now that I've wasted time on this, I really have to start my homework, blah!

Uh Huh
